I’ve tried countless products to keep my skin’s surface clear as possible. And this means trying to reduce brown spots, enlarged pores, ruddiness and more. At-home peels, while not the same as aesthetician-administered skin care, can still help you achieve a clearer complexion. Just keep in mind that peels—while they can do a lot—cannot lift sagging skin, reduce deep lines and fold or increase plumpness. What they can do is reduce hyperpigmentation, fine lines, skin roughness and enlarged pores, giving skin a dewier, fresher look.

Here are three peels that have given me consistent results over the years that I recommend to my readers:

  1. Peter Thomas Roth Un-Wrinkle Peel Pads: These pads are kind of like the Clearasil acne pads teenagers used to use for acne. This is a daily peel that’s loaded with alpha, beta and gamma exfoliators, amino acids, botanical extracts and anti-oxidants. They minimize pores, clarify the skin, reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and correct uneven skin tone, and are easy to use since you just rub the pads over your face and rinse off.
  2. Avon Anew Clinical Advanced Retexurizing Peel: This also comes in a pad form, but is stronger and Avon claims the results are similar to a professional 35% glycolic peel. I don’t know about that, but I do know that after consistent use, the skin looks somewhat resurfaced and definitely fresher. It peels away dullness and the aging effects of the sun. Can be uses 2-3 times a week.
  3. Ole Henriksen Lemon Flash Peel: This peel is a one-step peel powered by Lactic, Glycolic and fruit acids that go to work in three ways to exfoliate and resurface skin, while algae extract soothes and calms. It’s a spa-grade treatment that increases cell turnover, brightens skin tone and reduces the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a smoother, younger-looking complexion. It really helps with dark spots, too. Leave on for 10 minutes, then rinse off. I suggest starting off with using it twice a month to test sensitivity, and then working up to once a week.
